Ancient Greek And Latin + Courses
~Per aspera ad astra
Through suffering to the stars.
~χαλεπα τα καλα [khalepa ta kala]
Beautiful things are difficult / Beauty is harsh
Both expressions summarize the ancient languages in a way that sings to a cultivated soul.
Ancient Greek and Latin divided from one single language , Indo European, and were the foundation to maybe the most complex civilisations known to this day. We most certainly wouldn't have been here if not for Virgilius, Socrates, Homer, Ovid, Seneca and so many more.
Some would ask` “why would I even need to know such languages, they are of no use to me”
Well, some would be wrong.
Learning Latin first and foremost sharpens one's mind in a way no other language could. As we know, Latin is the mother language to Spanish, Romanian, Italian,French and therefore, learning Latin will stimulate your learning skills and make other languages seem less difficult to learn. Equally, it will make everything fall into place easier.
Then there is Ancient Greek . As Latin sharpens the mind,Greek is responsible for shaping and disciplining your mind.
The two need to be preserved for the sole reason that they strengthen our minds . You can't possibly master a language without learning of the civilization that was built around it . The two languages are intertwined and you can not know one without the other.
If you are interested in learning the two (or maybe just one of them) you have the opportunity now -if you missed it last year. FLLS( Facultatea de Limbi și Literaturi Străine) in Bucharest offers us for free, along with our prodigiously academical endowed teacher ,Dr. Theodor Georgescu - professor in the Department of Classical Philology of the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures, Classical and Neo-Greek Philology of FLLS-, the chance of learning these fascinating languages.
The courses started last year, Saturday, 7th October at 12 o'clock and will be held every Saturday-starting with 13th January- from 12 o'clock to 18 .
New members are always welcomed and, as the break is hurrying towards its end you should sign up and see if Classical Philology is what you`d like to learn from now on!
